Common use
Yasmin is primarily prescribed for contraception in women seeking a reliable hormonal method. Additionally, it is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate acne in women at least 14 years old who have no known contraindications to combination oral contraceptives, have achieved menarche, and desire contraception. Many healthcare providers also consider Yasmin for managing symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and menstrual-related symptoms, though these are off-label uses that require individual assessment.
Dosage and direction
Take one tablet daily at approximately the same time each day, preferably with food or at bedtime to minimize potential nausea. Begin with the first active tablet on the first day of menstrual bleeding or the Sunday after menstruation begins, following package instructions carefully. Continue taking one tablet daily for 21 consecutive days, then either take no tablets for 7 days or take the 7 placebo tablets included in the pack. Withdrawal bleeding typically occurs during this hormone-free interval. Begin a new pack on the 8th day regardless of bleeding status. For Sunday start regimens, begin taking tablets on the first Sunday after menstruation begins. If menstruation begins on Sunday, start that day.
Precautions
Yasmin increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. This risk is highest during the first year of use and when restarting after a break of four weeks or more. Smoking significantly increases this risk, particularly in women over 35 years old. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is essential. The pill does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. Women should be advised that hormonal contraceptives may affect glucose tolerance, so diabetic patients require careful monitoring. Periodic liver function tests may be warranted as the steroids in Yasmin are metabolized by the liver.
Contraindications
Yasmin is contraindicated in women with: current or history of thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders; known or suspected carcinoma of the breast; known or suspected estrogen-dependent neoplasia; undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding; known or suspected pregnancy; current or history of cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease; liver tumors or active liver disease; hypertension with vascular involvement; diabetes with vascular involvement; headaches with focal neurological symptoms; major surgery with prolonged immobilization; hypersensitivity to any component; and smokers over 35 years of age.
Possible side effects
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 users): nausea, headache, breast tenderness, mood changes, irregular bleeding during the first few months. Less common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 users): vomiting, diarrhea, contact lens intolerance, weight changes, reduced libido. Rare but serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention: severe abdominal pain; chest pain or shortness of breath; severe headaches; eye problems including vision loss or blurring; severe leg pain or swelling; jaundice; severe depression.
Drug interaction
Yasmin’s effectiveness may be reduced by: antibiotics (particularly rifampicin), antifungals (griseofulvin), certain anticonvulsants (phenytoin, carbamazepine, barbiturates, topiramate), modafinil, St. John’s Wort, and some HIV medications. Additional contraceptive protection is recommended during and for 7-28 days after concomitant therapy. Yasmin may affect the metabolism of other drugs including cyclosporine, theophylline, tizanidine, and lamotrigine. Drospirenone may increase potassium levels, so caution is advised when used with other potassium-raising drugs including NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin-II receptor antagonists, potassium-sparing diuretics, heparin, and aldosterone antagonists.
Missed dose
If one active tablet is missed (24-48 hours late): take it as soon as remembered, then continue at regular time. No additional protection needed. If two active tablets are missed in weeks 1 or 2: take two tablets as soon as remembered, then two tablets the next day, then resume regular schedule. Use backup contraception for 7 days. If two active tablets are missed in week 3 or three or more consecutive active tablets are missed: discard the current pack and start a new pack the same day. Use backup contraception for 7 days. If any placebo tablets are missed: discard them and continue with the next tablet at the regular time.
Overdose
Serious ill effects have not been reported following acute overdose of oral contraceptives. Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, and withdrawal bleeding in females. There is no specific antidote, and treatment should be symptomatic. Medical supervision is recommended, particularly with intentional overdose, as multiple medications may be involved. Serum potassium levels should be monitored in cases of significant overdose due to drospirenone’s potential potassium-sparing effects, especially in patients with renal insufficiency or those taking medications that increase potassium.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F). Protect from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack until time of use. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging. Properly dispose of unused medication through medication take-back programs or according to local guidelines.

Reviews
Clinical studies demonstrate high patient satisfaction with Yasmin, with many users reporting improved acne, regular cycles, and reduced premenstrual symptoms. In a 6-cycle study of 326 women, 82% reported improvement in acne lesions, with 60% showing complete or almost complete clearance. Satisfaction rates for contraceptive efficacy typically exceed 90% in clinical trials. Some users report initial side effects including nausea and breast tenderness that often resolve within the first few cycles. Healthcare providers generally consider Yasmin an effective option for appropriate candidates, noting its additional benefits beyond contraception while emphasizing the importance of proper patient selection and monitoring.
