The Ventolin Inhaler (albuterol sulfate) is a trusted, short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) bronchodilator designed for the rapid relief of acute bronchospasm. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, increasing airflow to the lungs within minutes of administration. This inhaler is a cornerstone in the management of reversible obstructive airway diseases, including asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Prescribed globally, it is recognized for its efficacy, reliability, and well-documented safety profile when used as directed under medical supervision.
Features
- Contains albuterol sulfate, a selective beta2-adrenergic agonist
- Delivers 90 mcg per actuation from the mouthpiece
- Metered-dose inhaler (MDI) with a built-in dose counter
- Rapid onset of action, typically within 5–15 minutes
- Portable, pressurized canister with actuator mouthpiece
- Available in 60 and 200 actuation canisters
- Compatible with valved holding chambers (spacers) for improved delivery
Benefits
- Provides rapid relief from acute asthma symptoms and bronchospasm
- Helps prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction when used prophylactically
- Improves lung function measurements (e.g., FEV1) quickly and effectively
- Enhances quality of life by reducing frequency and severity of breathing difficulties
- Portable and easy to use, allowing for immediate treatment anywhere
- Trusted and widely recommended by pulmonologists and allergists worldwide
Common use
Ventolin Inhaler is primarily indicated for the treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease, such as asthma. It is also used for the prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm. It is suitable for adults and children aged 4 years and older, though dosage may vary based on age and clinical need. It is not intended for daily maintenance therapy but rather for rescue use during acute episodes.
Dosage and direction
For treatment of acute bronchospasm:
- Adults and children 4 years and older: 2 inhalations every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
For prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm:
- Adults and children 4 years and older: 2 inhalations 15 to 30 minutes before exercise.
Shake well before each use. Prime the inhaler before first use or if not used for more than 2 weeks by releasing 4 test sprays into the air away from the face. Breathe out fully, place mouthpiece between lips, and inhale slowly and deeply while pressing down firmly on the canister. Hold breath for 10 seconds if possible, then exhale slowly. Wait at least 1 minute between inhalations. Rinse mouth with water after use to reduce the risk of thrush.
Precautions
- Not for use as a maintenance bronchodilator; increasing use may indicate deteriorating asthma control.
- Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders (e.g., hypertension, arrhythmias), diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or seizure disorders.
- May cause paradoxical bronchospasm; discontinue immediately if worsening breathing occurs.
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy unless clearly needed; discuss risks and benefits with a healthcare provider.
- Keep track of the number of doses used and discard after the labeled number of actuations or expiration date, even if it feels like there is medication left.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to albuterol or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to other beta-agonists.
Possible side effect
Common side effects may include:
- Nervousness
- Headache
- Throat irritation
- Tremor
- Tachycardia
- Palpitations
- Muscle cramps
Less common but serious side effects:
- Chest pain
- Irregular heartbeat
- Severe dizziness
- Worsening breathing problems
- Hypokalemia
- Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)
Drug interaction
- Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) may antagonize the effects of albuterol.
- Diuretics or corticosteroids may increase the risk of hypokalemia.
- MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may potentiate cardiovascular effects.
- Other sympathomimetic agents may increase the risk of adverse effects.
Missed dose
This medication is used on an as-needed basis for symptom relief. It is not intended for scheduled dosing, so a missed dose is not applicable. Do not use extra doses to make up for a missed one.
Overdose
Overdose may lead to exaggerated side effects such as angina, hypertension, hypokalemia, and seizures. Symptoms may include tachycardia, nervousness, headache, and muscle cramps. Treatment is supportive and may include cardioselective beta-blockers (with caution in asthma patients). Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C). Do not puncture or incinerate. Keep away from heat and open flame. Store with mouthpiece down. Keep out of reach of children.
