Trimox (amoxicillin) is a widely prescribed penicillin-class antibiotic designed to combat a broad spectrum of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to the eradication of susceptible organisms. Trusted by healthcare professionals globally, Trimox offers reliable, targeted action against common pathogens, helping restore health with a well-established safety profile. Available in multiple formulations, it is suitable for both adult and pediatric use under medical supervision.

Features

  • Active ingredient: Amoxicillin (as amoxicillin trihydrate)
  • Available in 250 mg, 500 mg, and 875 mg oral tablets
  • Also offered in chewable tablets and oral suspension for pediatric dosing
  • Rapid absorption with peak serum concentrations within 1–2 hours post-administration
  • Broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria
  • Stable in gastric acid, allowing for administration with or without food

Benefits

  • Effectively treats common bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis
  • Rapid onset of action helps alleviate symptoms within days of initiation
  • High bioavailability ensures consistent therapeutic blood levels
  • Flexible dosing options accommodate both adults and children
  • Well-tolerated profile with a low incidence of severe adverse effects
  • Prevents complications from untreated bacterial infections, including systemic spread

Common use

Trimox is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including:

  • Otitis media (middle ear infection)
  • Streptococcal pharyngitis (strep throat)
  • Lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Urinary tract infections (uncomplicated)
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication (as part of combination therapy)

Dosage and direction

Dosage must be individualized based on the infection’s severity, pathogen susceptibility, and patient factors such as age and renal function.

Adults:

  • Mild to moderate infections: 500 mg every 12 hours or 250 mg every 8 hours
  • Severe infections: 875 mg every 12 hours or 500 mg every 8 hours

Children:

  • 20–40 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8 or 12 hours, depending on severity
  • Maximum pediatric dose should not exceed adult dosing

Oral suspension must be shaken well before each use. Tablets may be taken with or without food; however, administration with food may reduce gastrointestinal upset.

Precautions

  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve to prevent antibiotic resistance.
  • Use with caution in patients with mononucleosis due to increased risk of rash.
  • Monitor renal and hepatic function in patients with pre-existing conditions.
  • May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives; advise alternative contraception during therapy.
  • Not recommended for use in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, especially colitis.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, penicillin, or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • History of amoxicillin-associated cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction.
  • Concomitant use with disulfiram (for oral suspension formulations containing alcohol).

Possible side effect

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Mild skin rash or itching
  • Headache or dizziness

Less common but serious side effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, angioedema)
  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea
  • Hepatitis or jaundice
  • Blood dyscrasias (e.g., leukopenia, thrombocytopenia)

Drug interaction

  • Probenecid may reduce renal excretion of amoxicillin, increasing serum levels.
  • Concurrent use with allopurinol may increase the incidence of skin rash.
  • May diminish the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
  • Tetracyclines and other bacteriostatic antibiotics may reduce amoxicillin’s efficacy.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Overdose

Symptoms may include severe gastrointestinal distress (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), crystalluria, or renal impairment. Management is supportive; hemodialysis may be effective in removing amoxicillin from circulation.

Storage

  • Store at room temperature (15–30°C).
  • Keep oral suspension refrigerated; discard unused portion after 14 days.
  • Protect from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
