Oxytrol is a transdermal system designed to manage the symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB) in adults. As an antimuscarinic agent, it works by relaxing the bladder muscle, reducing urgency, frequency, and incontinence episodes. Available over-the-counter for women and by prescription for men, it offers a convenient, non-oral treatment option that maintains steady drug delivery over several days. This product card provides a comprehensive, evidence-based overview for healthcare professionals and informed consumers.
Features

Common use
Oxytrol is indicated for the treatment of overactive bladder with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency. It is approved for use in adults, with OTC availability specifically for women aged 18 years and older. Men require a prescription. It is often recommended when lifestyle modifications alone are insufficient, or when oral anticholinergic side effects are problematic. It may be used as monotherapy or as part of a comprehensive bladder management plan.
Dosage and direction
Apply one patch to clean, dry, intact skin on the abdomen, hip, or buttock twice weekly (every 3–4 days). Rotate application sites to avoid skin irritation; do not apply to the same site within 7 days. Ensure the skin is free of oils, lotions, or powders before application. Press firmly for 30 seconds to ensure adhesion, especially around edges. Replace on a regular schedule (e.g., Sunday and Wednesday). Do not cut patches.
Precautions
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment
- May cause blurred vision or drowsiness; advise against driving or operating machinery until effects are known
- Avoid exposure to excessive heat (e.g., saunas, heating pads) over application site
- Monitor for signs of urinary retention in patients with bladder outlet obstruction
- Not recommended for use in children or adolescents
- Discontinue if severe skin reactions occur
Contraindications
- Patients with urinary retention
- Gastric retention or other conditions with severe decreased gastrointestinal motility
- Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
- Hypersensitivity to oxybutynin or any component of the patch adhesive
- Myasthenia gravis
Possible side effects
Common (≥1%):
- Application site reactions (pruritus, erythema, rash)
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Blurred vision
Less common:
- Urinary tract infection
- Diarrhea
- Dry eyes
- Dyspepsia
- Insomnia
Rare but serious:
- Angioedema
- Central nervous system effects (hallucinations, confusion)
- Tachycardia
- Severe allergic dermatitis
Drug interaction
- May enhance effects of other anticholinergic drugs
- Concurrent use with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, clarithromycin) may increase oxybutynin levels
- May reduce efficacy of metoclopramide or other prokinetic agents
- Potential additive sedative effects with CNS depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines)
- Use cautiously with other drugs that cause constipation
Missed dose
Apply the patch as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not apply extra patches to make up for a missed dose.
Overdose
Symptoms may include severe anticholinergic effects: central nervous system excitation (restlessness, tremor, delirium), flushing, fever, dehydration, cardiac arrhythmias, vomiting, and urinary retention. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; activated charcoal may be considered if ingested. Physostigmine may be used in severe cases under medical supervision.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20–25°C). Keep in original pouch until use. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use if pouch is damaged or opened.
