Nasonex Nasal Spray (mometasone furoate monohydrate) is a prescription corticosteroid spray designed for the management of nasal symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps. It works locally in the nasal passages to reduce inflammation, providing significant and sustained relief from congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and itching. Clinically proven and trusted by healthcare professionals, it offers a targeted approach with minimal systemic absorption, making it a first-line choice for both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Proper administration ensures optimal efficacy while maintaining a favorable safety profile.
Features
- Active ingredient: mometasone furoate monohydrate equivalent to 50 mcg mometasone furoate per spray
- Delivery system: metered-dose, manual pump spray bottle
- Quantity: 17g (120 sprays) or 60g (consistent with labeled number of actuations)
- Preservative: benzalkonium chloride
- pH-balanced, aqueous suspension
- Suitable for adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older
Benefits
- Reduces nasal inflammation at the source for comprehensive symptom control
- Provides 24-hour relief from allergic rhinitis symptoms with once-daily dosing
- Minimizes systemic steroid exposure due to low bioavailability
- Non-sedating and non-habit forming
- Helps improve quality of life by restoring normal nasal breathing and sleep
- May reduce the need for rescue medications like oral antihistamines or decongestants
Common use
Nasonex is indicated for the treatment of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 2 years of age and older. It is also approved for the prophylaxis of seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms when initiated 2–4 weeks prior to the anticipated start of the pollen season. Additionally, it is used for nasal polyps in patients 18 years of age and older, helping to reduce polyp size and associated congestion.
Dosage and direction
Shake gently before each use. Prime the pump before first use or if not used for 14 days or more by releasing 10 sprays into the air until a fine mist appears.
- Allergic rhinitis (adults and adolescents 12+): 2 sprays in each nostril once daily (total 200 mcg/day). Once symptoms are controlled, reduce to 1 spray per nostril.
- Allergic rhinitis (children 2–11 years): 1 spray in each nostril once daily (total 100 mcg/day).
- Nasal polyps (adults 18+): 2 sprays in each nostril twice daily (total 400 mcg/day). After symptoms improve, may reduce to once daily.
Always blow nose gently before use. Insert tip into nostril, pointing away from the septum, and breathe in gently while spraying.
Precautions
- Not for use in the eyes or mouth.
- Use with caution in patients with recent nasal surgery, nasal trauma, or nasal ulcers.
- May cause delayed wound healing.
- Monitor for signs of localized fungal infection (e.g., Candida).
- Systemic corticosteroid effects may occur, especially at higher than recommended doses or in susceptible individuals.
- Not recommended for use during active or quiescent tuberculosis, untreated fungal, bacterial, or viral infections, or ocular herpes simplex.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mometasone furoate or any ingredient in the formulation.
- Untreated localized infection involving the nasal mucosa.
Possible side effects
Common side effects may include:
- Headache
- Nasal irritation
- Pharyngitis
- Epistaxis (nosebleeds)
- Nasal burning or stinging
Less common but serious side effects:
- Signs of adrenal suppression (e.g., fatigue, weakness, nausea)
- Glaucoma or cataracts with long-term use
- Perforation of the nasal septum
- Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)
Drug interaction
Although Nasonex has low systemic absorption, caution is advised when used concomitantly with other corticosteroids. CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole) may increase mometasone plasma concentrations. No clinically significant interactions with common antihistamines or decongestants have been reported.
Missed dose
If a dose is missed, use it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely due to limited systemic absorption. If excessive doses are used chronically, systemic glucocorticoid effects such as hypercorticism or adrenal suppression may occur. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C or 59–86°F). Do not freeze. Keep the bottle upright and away from direct light. Keep out of reach of children. Discard after the labeled number of sprays has been used, even if bottle is not completely empty.
